What’s news to you? Local political happenings? A new business is setting up shop in La Grande? Lost kitten? You spotted Willy Nelson at the Flying J?
Some are beat reporters, some quiet observationalists. But there’s news all around us so let’s share it with each other. Rather than news being fed to us in a pile that we have to sift through in order to find what we’re looking for, let’s turn to each other for the specific news that matters to us.
Over the last year there has been a considerable amount of “close calls” on the intersection of Washington and Depot street in downtown La Grande, Oregon. From efforts made be La Grande Main Street, concerned citizens and the City of La Grande public works has installed 2 new stops signs making the intersection a 4-WAY STOP.
Join EOU President Bob Davies for an informal coffee hour on Tuesday, August 3rd. Everyone is invited to attend. This month the meeting will take place at White House Coffee (1702 Fourth Street) and is scheduled from 8:00am to 10:00am.

The 2010 Crossing the Blues: La Grande Summer Festival is gearing up again for its third year. August 20 & 21 plan to take to the streets in Historic Downtown La Grande, Oregon to join in a slew of great events celebrating the arts and culture in our great community. La Grande Downtown welcomes travelers and residents to help celebrate everything that makes La Grande the community we love. Enjoy local foods, noted musicians, nationally-recognized artists and writers, and independent filmmakers as part of the La Grande Summer Film Project at this year’s summer festival.
The 50th Annual Crazy Days event will be in Downtown La Grande starting Friday July 9th thru Saturday, July 10. This year the event will take on a new flavor celebrating our pioneer heritage with an Oregon Trail theme. Crazy Days has been around for a long time and has become one of the biggest traditions among merchants downtown. The event draws one of the largest amounts of the community members to most of the Historic Downtown of La Grande.
…end the day with live music by Al MacLeod and friends, fire truck rides and FIREWORKS at the EOU Community Stadium. Fireworks begin at twilight, so be sure and come early to enjoy the days events. Don’t forget to bring a blanket and picnic basket, then sit back and enjoy the show of brilliant bursting colors overhead.
A new coffee house is opening in La Grande this Saturday, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s called White House Coffee and it’s (you guessed it) in the big white house at 1702 Fourth Street.

La Grande residents came together to meet with Oregon’s nominee for Governor in 2010, John A. Kitzhaber. The event was very well attended even though the meeting was added to the former Governors’ schedule at the last minute. The La Grande Main Street Program is working to revitalize our downtown using the tried and true Main Street Approach. This is a comprehensive means to rebuild a healthy downtown by addressing the economic challenges facing downtown, beautifying and restoring the historic heart of our community and promoting the downtown with fun events and quality marketing.
The Main Street Program is volunteer driven by downtown businesses owners, community members and supported by many local organizations. These volunteers serve on committees addressing the four main components of downtown revitalization: Design, Promotion, Economic Restructuring and Organization.
The Main Street Program is always looking for new volunteers and members. For more information on how you can help restore our downtown to its deserved prominence in our community.
